JAPANTOWN MURAL PROJECT AT 2nd annual matsuri (Summer FESTIVAL)

In the heart of the downtown core, Yonge Dundas Square proudly presents the 2nd Toronto Japanese Summer Festival, a celebration of Japanese culture, music, art, fashion and food. The festival is open to the public and free for everyone.

Other than the bright bright sun and smokey meat accompaying huge lineupS, I spotted a Yamato-e style living painting section at the corner of the square. The artists are associated with Japantown Mural Project. (check out their works!)

Apparently (although it’s obvious enough for torontonian) Japanese didn’t have their present in the downtown cord unlike some areas are named based on the local culture and population census ( China Town, Korean Town or Little Italy), and they could like to be invited by to this busy urban life. Surrounded by loud music and people conversation, the facilitator didn’t deliver the speech completely.

Whether they would nd a place called community is a story of another time. Their objective are most heartwarming:

  • Collective action for the betterment of Japanese Canadians and their community
  • Equal rights and liberities for all Canadians, regardless of race, colour, creed, national origin, gender or sexual orientation.
  • Protecting the rights of all groups in Canada through cooperation with organizations sharing the aim of the NAJC
  • Promoting cultural, educational, social and recreational activities and the duties and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship to our community and others
  • Voicing the interest of Japanese Canadians to national, provincial and local governments and other organizations.

Call for Submissions: Ontario Nonprofit Network

Attention artists! ONN (Ontario Nonprot Network) is hosting an art showcase and they want you to be involved.

A curated art showcase will coincide with the annual 2014 conference in September 2014 with over 400 representatives from the nonprot sector from across Ontario in attendance. The theme is “communal landscapes” and is meant to be both metaphorically and literally interpreted. Landscapes reect the union of places and people and represent a very unique identity. “Their character and quality, help dene the self-image of a region, its sense of place that dierentiates it from other regions.” It is the current, the dynamic set, that ows through people’s lives both internally and externally and touches upon every facet of social, cultural and political dynamics.

The art pieces can also reect, in some way, the ONN’s vision of a strong and resilient non-prot sector within a dynamic province. They should also reect its aim to engage, advocate and lead with charitable organizations for the public benet of Ontario. For more details on the ONN please

Works selected for the showcase will be made available for sale, if desired by the entrant, and will be exhibited over the course of the two day event (September 17-18). Artists can apply to attend the event and to assist in the installation or mounting of their pieces.

ELIGIBILITY

The showcase is an open exhibition of original paintings, original prints, original sculpture and drawings in any media open to all visual artists within Ontario, with a particular preference for artists outside Toronto and Ottawa.

Artists may not substitute another work for an accepted work. The conference organizers reserve the right to refuse to hang any painting that does not match the original digital entry.

Entries must not be copies, derivatives, or based in any way on other copyrighted or published paintings, photographs or other artistic works. They must be entirely the work of the entrant.

DEADLINE: Submissions will be accepted until midnight August 11th, 2014.

Turtle House Art/Play Centre’s Mission:
is a unique art-based organization in Toronto, designed primarily for children and families from refugee backgrounds to explore their creativity, play, express themselves and make meaningful connections.

Toronto Arts Foundation- Telus Newcomer Award Announced

Neighbourhood Arts Network Announces
The 2nd Annual TELUS Newcomer Artist Award!

With the common goal to support and celebrate newcomer artists in the City of Toronto, TELUS and the Neighbourhood Arts Network are pleased to announce the TELUS Newcomer Artist Award, a $10,000 cash prize celebrating a newcomer artist living in the City of Toronto. Administered by the Neighbourhood Arts Network and Toronto Arts Foundation, this prize is specically geared towards an individual artist who is a newcomer to Canada, a resident of the City of Toronto, and making a positive impact in their community through their artistic practice.

You are eligible if you are:

  • An individual artist
  • A newcomer to Canada (having moved to Canada within 1 to 7 years)
  • Over the age of 18
  • A current resident of the City of Toronto (Must have lived in Toronto for a minimum of 1 year)
  • A Neighbourhood Arts Network member (You must sign up for our free membership prior to applying at www.neighbourhoodartsnetwork.org

Award Selection Process: Applications will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary jury selected by the Neighbourhood Arts Network and Toronto Arts Foundation. Jury members will have recognized expertise, prestige, credibility, and experience, along with a sense of history and perspective. The jury will be comprised of participants who are practitioners of the arts, organizers, programmers, producers, curators, critics, commentators and lay specialists. The Neighbourhood Arts Network and Toronto Arts Foundation will endeavor to ensure that the majority of jury members are arts and culture professionals.

Bill C-24

As June 12th, Bill C- 24 recived Royal Assent and is now Law.
The bylaw listed 9 eligibility requirements, 11 fraud provisions and 6 decision factors, this law questions the eligibilities of people with duo citizenship, expecially the ones spend long time outside of Canada, and the ones come into Canada with their orignial citizenship.
For new Canadian citizenship applicants, they would have to sign an agreement indicate that “they intend to stay in Canada”, and possibly give up their old citizenship status. The government will also track the people whom already obtained Canadian citizenship, yet proven currently residing outside of Canada. Their Canadian citizenship might be reviewed, worst case, revoked and withdrawn.
